Web stats should be crucial to you. I look at mine everyday to see where people are coming from, what they are looking at and how they arrived here.
Across all my sites I have a similar picture. Nearly all my traffic comes from the USA and the UK. Not surprising I guess. This site is different though. Of course more people visit from the USA than every other country put together but Australians are in second place.
It is surprising to me that I get more Aussies than I do Brits. The craziest thing is that I get nearly as many visitors from Peru as I do the UK. Peru is n’t even an English speaking country!
Anyway keep your eye on your web stats, particularly the search terms that people are typing in to find your site. If people are looking for a certain something then give them more of it and they’ll come back.
It is also sometimes amusing to check out these search terms. Here is a small selection of what people typed into search engines to find WN.
- hoe to earn life through internet (no doubt the word hoe was picked up from Rusty Hoe)
- bangkok hoe
- lampusuluh (?)
- motorised toilet

Umm, Motorised toilet? That’s funny.

I’m in Peru, Webby. I’m doing it backwards. Travel first, then figure out how to support the travel on the web.

I think it would be difficult to start a web business while on the rode. Probably easier to set things up at home first.
Difficult - but not impossible. Find a place where you can get free internet and just work all day!
Start with a blog on blogger.com which offers free hosting and you can get an Adsense account pretty easy.
The longer you delay getting started, the harder it becomes. The quicker you can start at least one site, get it in the search engines, get some links and PR, the easier it becomes to create new site.
The first site is definitely the hardest.

Mike, that is great advice mate. One of the mistakes I made initially was to not actually start making my first site.
I agonised over the topic for ages before I got down to work and I kind of regret that.
The first site is the hardest but you just have to get stuck in and get it up there. This is how you learn. You can read and read until your eyes bleed but having that first site live makes all the difference.

I get quite a few people from Peru so I assume they are probably other travelers.
In fact I get a lot from other popular destinations as well such as Thailand, Mexico and France.
Who would be searching for a motorised toilet and what is one anyway?

If I had a laptop with me, it would make a big difference. Next time. But it’s OK. This is where I got travel burn-out big time, so this is where I started. Besides, I never really do the sensible thing, anyway.
