I have never managed to break through the $100 a day barrier with Google Adsense. I have been very close on a number of occasions but never managed to limp over the three figure line.
The usual pattern over a couple of months is that adsense earnings build up and continue northwards and then suddenly fall back (usually at the beginning of a month). It’s like I am always starting over again and I find it impossible to have an consisitency.
On the other hand my affiliate links are much more stable in terms of income and much higher. I am considering ditching Adsense soon on sites where I have a steady affiliate income. There is nothing more annoying than getting 10 clicks and earning 50c for all of them! Some call it smart-pricing, I call it getting cheap traffic.
So I would strongly advise people to look at the affiliate side more. It takes more setting up and work to manage things but the financial rewards usually outweigh the extra maintenance.

You could be using that space for a more reliable income, couldn’t you?

I’d say pushing $100 a day and then falling and then rising up again is pretty reliable. How much does it fall at the beginning of the month? But I know what you mean… I’m the opposite. I can count on Adsense being pretty steady but affiliates are a whole other story at the moment. I look forward to the day when that all changes!

I see what you mean Kirsty, I guess looking at it that way it is pretty reliable!
In general it does not fall back that much and I rarely get near $100 these days. Had a really good run in Jan then fell right back to $18 one day!
Climbed up again to $70 and back to $30 a day. I am currently climbing at the moment but know that I will be dropping back at some point.
All along my traffic is steady or increasing. Adsense does not seem to match traffic and that’s what I find frustrating at times.

That’s far too microscopic. Unless you are hunting for a trend you can use to improve traffic, look at long term graphs and statistics. What has your average monthly income been for the last six months? What was it for the same six months a year ago? This business of being up one day and down another is not worth your time or attention unless you are looking for a problem to fix. And then ask if you could do better using that space for affiliates.

I spent a lot of time when I started with Adsense changing colors, ad positions and so on. I have pretty much given up trying optimize the ads. I like to think of adsense as icing on the cake, rather than core income.
