October 2006

Well my travel insurance site is well and truly on its way. Just have to write a few articles, try and find a few more insurance affiliates for US and Canadian backpackers (which I am having a surprisingly hard time doing… it seems to me like the online insurance market is far more developed for UK residents), and design a logo of some kind. That site is very affiliate-oriented so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. I think it will be difficult to get traffic to it because of competition but hopefully it will be useful for people and will catch on.

I’ve also added a lonely affiliate link to Amazon on one of my sites. At the moment it links directly to Amazon.com’s sales page for the book but I have plans to link it to a page on my site where there will be a review and then out to Amazon. Will also add more books but I’ve never really had much success with Amazon in the past. Does anyone really make any money with it?

Plus tonight I’ll be adding The Beer Belly to my Van Tour page. I’ve got another party site in the works too so I think this is a good fit and am interested to see how it goes. All small potatoes though since this site doesn’t get any traffic until the beginning of the summer!

Will keep you posted.

Two weeks today and I will be back in Bali, Indonesia just like I was this time last year. I am on a one way ticket again with the same airline and the same stopover. The ticket cost a lot more this year for some reason.

I will not be in Bali for long this time, just long enough to catch a few waves and catch up with a few people as well. I am then meeting a friend in Singapore and then onto Thailand for November before heading to Cambodia and Vietnam.

So the crazy life of the Working Nomad looks set to continue! Bring it on, I say…

Well September 2005 was my first earnings report on this blog amounting to GBP 460 for the month. Things have certainly moved on from one year ago.

My total for September 2006 came in at a little over GBP 2700 or USD 4900. This makes September a record month and gets me close to my December goal of earning USD 5000 a month from websites. Hopefully this is now within my grasp!

As per usual this month has seen a very slow start and I’ll be hard pressed to get anywhere near September. Now I have had some experience of this I realise that it seems to be a trend to start the month slow so I aint panicking just yet!

I have two laptops (neither very expensive!). One big heavy Dell with all the whistles and bells and my small Toshiba Portege which is literally falling to pieces. The events of this slightly drunken evening in Kuala Lumpur did n’t do much to extend the life of my smaller laptop.

So I have pretty much decided to go with the Dell for my winter escape. It is much heavier than the Portege but it has many additonal advantages. It has much more processing power, the keyboard is bigger and it should help me be more productive.

It also has a DVD / CD Rom which is something I never had before which can be useful for nights in on the road.

I am off to France on Saturday with my Mother on a belated birthday five day holiday treat. It will be a little insight for her into the world of independent travel which should be cool.

Well after another sub $100 month with Adsense ($92) I’m switching gears a bit. Spurred on by Webby’s admission that 75% of his income is currently coming from affiliates, I’ve finally gotten the point.

I think I’ve found a pretty good niche for flogging travel insurance and am working hard at setting it all up. Coupled with one of my other sites (both with good .com domain names stacked with keywords) I think I’ll be able to have a crack at really becoming a reliable, trusted authority on the subject on the net. If I can manage to do this then I think there are some good things in my future.

I’m only being mysterious until I finish this current site but all will be revealled hopefully next weekend and I’ll be looking for some feedback. Yep, I’ve changed my focus yet again!
