I agree that learning a language is a great way to utilize your time. Apart from the social aspect, it's also good exercise for the brain and makes a change from just working on all things web-related. Anything that stimulates the old grey-matter has got to be good.

When I was studying Thai, I found the discipline of attending classes at a set time helped me be more productive with my work projects. I also met some real characters who I wouldn't otherwise have met.

I speak Spanish and French very well, however in the end learning a language is immersion in the culture.

A few women, a few sleeping dictionaries and you will be arguing in Spanish,
"Mas or Menos."
Andy in Cusco, Peru, the land of Tourist asking silly questions.

You are lucky to be studying the Spanish language in a Spanish speaking country. It is waaaay easier to pick up that way.

If you get a chance you should check out San Sabastian/Donostia. It is a small Basque town up north and has a pretty nice beach. I hear there is surfing near by too.

I've made three trips to Sydney just to visit King's Cross. Loved hanging out there. Seemed safe, enjoyed VB (Victoria Bitters). Days at Bondi, drinking all nite at King's Cross, was heaven.

I agree that KL is forgettable, though.

Re: Homeless in California. A lot of homeless end up in Cali because of the tolerant attitudes and mild climate, (along with the alchoholics and druggies). But when you are down and out, where are you gonna go? Many states used to dump their indigent and homeless by giving them a one-way bus ticket to San Francisco, once there, they accumulate. Cali always gets a bad rap all around, but most people that live there are from "somewhere else". The comment on the "prosperous" state is actually why a lot of people become homeless as costs rise (house prices are outrageous), (rent, auto, gas, food, etc) and salaries don't increase, especially for the poor. As the US economy tanks, more layoffs will push more people to the streets. Did you notice the rent of a one bed room apartment, how you gonna keep an apartment that is twice your salary? Once you become homeless its almost imposssible to get out because you don't have a way to take a shower, store clothes to keep a job, can't afford a auto (if you could, would you be homeless???), etc. Yes, the rents are cheaper inland away from like LA, SF, San Diego, etc.. But then there is no or limited support for the poor and homeless. I am not trying to rag on you, just want the rest of the world to understand about why the large amount of homeless and not to get turned off to visiting.

There are some decent hostels. The one outside Yellowstone National Park is fine. I thought the one in Key West was OK. Savannah is awful. The one on Maui is full of windsurfers so you can't watch TV in the evenings because they look at windsurfing DVDs all night. There's no one to talk to, unless you are into windsurfing, but the hostel was fine, and the other Hawaiian ones were OK. It's just that if there are two of you, you can usually get a motel room for not much more, so they aren't very profitable.

I recently took a few weeks off work & went to see a friend up in Arkansas & looped back throgh Georgia & SC the two nights I had booked in Hostels Where both Disasters
nough said, Maybe I'm getting old but as you mentioned the motels here are cheap & decent all with wifi, I used hotwire for all my nights in hotels/motels & was never disapointed paying $40 - $50 each night.

Ok, so you look EXACTLY the same in every picture. You should just skip the traveling, photoshop a picture your head and paste it on a bunch of pictures. :P
