Earnings and Budget

Graph Web EarningsHere is a little something I created earlier. It is a graph of my web earnings since I started to earn over £100 a month.

It is interesting to note from the graph that my income increase coincides with me starting my trip last year and there is a steep incline until I arrive in New Zealand when I more or less stopped working on my sites.

June was poor due to me being more interested in surfing and the World Cup in Bali than the web. No surprise there.

I started working hard again in July when I first got home and again there has been a steep increase. So the moral of the story is if you put in the effort you should be rewarded!

Well there was no record month this time around but I got close to my best of month of July. My web earnings for August came in at £2210 or $4140.

I am pretty pleased to have consolidated this slightly higher level and if September brings me the same then that’ll be cool.

My next target is to get to $5000 a month and I believe this is achievable by the end of 2006.

By the way on Septmber 3rd Working Nomad was one year old! Can’t believe it has been one year. Here is my original posting on that day.

Well I hinted that I’d had a good month and I was not kidding. My earnings from all things web for the month of July came in at just under £2280 or $4350.

It is particularly satisfying as I set myself this goal back in March that when I got back to the UK in the summer I wanted to be earning £500 a week from the Internet (which is roughly what I was earning in the corporate rat race before).

Well despite a very poor June I actually go there, probably more by luck than judgement as the summer is normaly pretty dead!

It was just a distant dream back in 2004 when I started all this web stuff that I could ever earn this much from the web and equal my salary from the suited and booted jungle. If it seems like a distant dream to you then I hope this make’s you realise it’s all possible.

The opportunities for earning a living from the web are greater than ever before so keep plugging away because you can make it happen.

My balance sheet is n’t quite finished explaining how my money was earnt and spent but I have just worked out my profit (before tax) from the Asia trip and it came in at GBP £2300 or US $4200 which is fantastic news.

I’d originally planned to come home with the same bank balance than when I left. Based on my original goal and these figures I think I can say the trip was a financial success.

Over the next few months in Europe and Africa I hope to maintain this although it will be harder with the higher costs of living and travel. For instance the weekend in London I just had cost me more than a week’s living expenses in Asia!

Switzerland should be a challenge seeing as it is one of the most expensive countries on one of the most expensive continents. I hope to counter this expense by such measures as taking my tent.

Things are picking up web earnings wise. I had a record day on Saturday of over GBP £150 which was unexpected as the weekends are normally way down on weekdays. My weekly earnings tends to peak on Tuesday and then head steadily down to Fri /Sat and recovers a bit on Sunday.

It is still the height of summer here and people are generally more interested in cooking themselves outside than surfing the web, which is fair enough I suppose.

Well the jet lag has subsided now and those things that I have been putting off need to be addressed. That means filling out my tax return for the year up to April 06 :(

Unlike in the USA where you pay tax wherever you are the rules for the UK and the rest of Europe differs. I was offshore for a great chunk of the tax year so in theory I should not have to pay UK tax.

To be honest as the figures are quite low I was considering just paying the UK tax this time and then looking into ways of changing my status but this is a very grey area.

If anyone has been in a similar position I’d love to hear your feedback on this before I seek advice from the IR.

Well the summer time is traditionally a slow time for Internet traffic and that has been reflected in the amount that I have earned in June. My earnings from the web came in at just under £1400 or $2590.

I am not too dissapointed with June because of the seasonal trends and the fact that many other webmasters have seen a drop in their income. The last half of the month was pretty strong and I hope to carry this into July.

I am going to produce a comprehensive financial breakdown of the entire trip soon. I will definetly be going home in the black, even if I manage to get off in Germany!

The earnings reports, like the rest of this site, will continue on so keep us bookmarked!

I had a storming last week in May and it has been a record month for earnings, but only just. I made slightly more than I did in March coming in just under £1600 or USD$ 3010.

Looking at the value in USD I guess that I breaking the $3000 barrier is quite a milestone for me which is good motivation.

My new goal was to be earning £500 a week by the time I get home in July but I don’t think this is going to happen. June has seen a very quiet start and I’ll be doing well to match May.

Internet traffic goes down quite a bit in the US/Europe summertime and the Football World Cup will not help either!

I am not going to panic if my earnings takes a dive. I will be going home with more money in the bank than when I left London last October so the overall goal for this trip will have been achieved.

Firstly apologies for the delay on the e-book. I have been having some issues with sending emails over the weekend but it looks to be OK and I have sent the e-book off to the first batch of people. If you don’t get it today you will tomorrow.

Had a great weekend with some expats I met here in Kuta and I am off to stay with a couple of them in their villa surrounded by rice paddy fields for a day or so.

Now for the money. For the first time for a while I have not surpassed my previous month and my total earnings came in at just under £1450 for the month.

I am a bit disappointed to be honest but I’ve had a good start to May so I am pretty positive. I am hoping the work I did in KL will be rewarded this month.

OK I know I said that March was not looking like a record month. Well it was in the end! The first two weeks saw me well down due to a collapse in visitors to a couple of my big earners.

For some reason unknown to me things went crazy in the last week with record visitor numbers across many of my sites. I have tried to investigate why this happened and I have found that the Yahoo search engine made some big changes to its index which may account for the spike.

So now for the figures for March. I earned a little over £1550 or $2800 from the web in this month. There were three more days in March than Feb so it would have been pretty even over all.

Now my spending and earnings since I left home last October. I am currently £700 better off than I was when I left England which I am pretty pleased about. I have spent a lot of money though for a backpacker. I worked out that I’ll be on my 14 flight on Saturday!

My first goal was to go home better off than when I left but now it is to go home with what I consider a UK living wage. I am starting to believe I can achieve this in a month or so and then I want to earn more than I did working in the corporate jungle.

I am realising now that if I set my targets higher I feel far more motivated. Motivation was an issue when I was striving for $20 a day and even recently I have had motivational issues. I am now thinking big and it is helping me to the next level.

Thinking big is something I remember reading on Webmasterworld a while ago and it is one of the best tips out there.

I will never get tired of saying ‘it has been another record month’. It was a close run thing with January though. My web site earnings came in at just over GBP 1500 or USD 2700 which is fantastic (especially as it is only 28 days as well).

What makes this even better is that I have n’t done too much to the sites in February. Don’t be fooled into thinking that I earn money for doing nothing. Remember it took quite a bit of effort and research before I left the UK to be in this situation (with little return then!)

I am due back in Southeast Asia later in the month and will be putting my foot on the gas again. My web site traffic has been very consistent through Feb. but consistency is not enough in this business (or any business for that matter). Never stand still.

I am really into setting myself goals these days. When I get back to the UK in the summer I want to be earning GBP 500 a week from the Internet (I am 3/4 of the way there). This constitutes a decent living wage for me and will mean that I won’t slip back into the rat race!

I remember reading in the early days over a year ago that if you can’t see yourself succeeding then you often won’t. I did n’t honestly believe I could earn a living wage from the web back then.

At that stage I got a bit disillusioned with it all and did n’t feel I was getting the financial reward that my effort deserved.

What changed my mind set then? I continued to read the success stories of others and it really started to inspire and motivate me. I started to think if others can achieve this then I can.

I should stop now because I am sounding like one of those ‘motivation’ speakers at business events! I can see why they are so popular though. Maybe I could stage one focusing on earning from the Internet? Now there’s a thought…
