Imposter
Sun 16 Sep 2007
As I write this, the ink is still wet on the freshly-signed resignation letter on the desk next to me. In just seven weeks from now I will be leaving my front door and heading overland from the UK over to France, Switzerland, Germany, Russia and beyond - armed with a laptop and a whole host of ideas for new sites.
After wanting this for nearly two years, I finally have the opportunity to make a go of it. And I would be lying if I said I wasn’t soiling myself slightly at the uncertainty of it all!
Luckily, my company have offered me a “sabbatical” arrangement, so I can go straight back to my job on my return (if I return…) at the same salary and grade - so I really have nothing to lose by taking the plunge, but everything to gain.
So here’s to the Working Nomad life on the road - and for all those of you striving to get there, I can offer you Webby’s words of advice that he gave to me in our first correspondence back in February 2006: “good luck and never give it up because it can be done.”

Congrats Imposter! Sounds like your employer is giving you a great safety net. I hope you’ll keep us posted on your success here, or share a link where we can see the fruits of your labor abroad.

Hey that’s great to hear! You beat me to it! I’m quitting in three months and off to Asia in January so might see you out there. I was toying with the idea of going overland through Russia but didn’t much like my chances in Siberia in January. I think I’d rather be on the beach.
One thing I’m really excited about is the chance to be able to work on my sites full time (in theory) and also to add content first hand from the road. With that combo I think it’ll just keep things going upwards and I think the same will be true for you.

Great news!
Really good to see all these Nomads taking off around the World with their laptops. Somehow it makes all this shit worth it.

All what shit? Not liking the work anymore?
I love this gig… I did it for years as a hobby so getting paid for it is pretty sweet.

I’m still in hobby mode, however I have to admit the draw of increased earnings has the potential to turn me into Gollum if I’m not careful.
Thankfully, I have built in protection being that I’m leaving the US in about 2 months.

It can be done - it will be done - if you do it. You just have to decide to do it and be patient.
I just struck out on my own two months and five days ago.
I’m not really a “nomad” (I already live in a great place - Phuket) and I don’t even own a “laptop” or notebook computer. Just a clunky old desktop - and it works just fine. Just making note that there are other options than the “nomad with a laptop” stereotype. It’s not a requirement - in fact I would find it a great distraction.
Like Kirsty, I started out with a hobby - that started making a little money - and I saw the potential to make a much better life for myself, where I controlled the options.
If you never get worried about your decisions it means you are never challenging yourself. It’s not bad to have your hand on the back door as an escape to go back - but don’t let that lessen your commitment to succeed, or use it as an excuse when things seem discouraging (as they will from time to time, I promise!).
Not to be too mystical . . . but do look for little signs along the way that you are doing the right thing - they WILL be there. Just about every time I get really discouraged - BANG! - something happens - a big sale goes through and I get revitalized.
Someone on the forum said that you will hit a low at about three months - I hit it last week. You will come to realize how little you know and how much there is to learn and that you can never learn it all. But, as I said, BANG!, something will happen that will tell you that you are on the right path.
I KNOW I am on the right path. Lots to learn, but I enjoy learning. Lots to do, but I enjoy doing it.
So . . . sorry to babble on so much - Go get ‘em Tiger! There is a good support team right here.

Shit has many different meanings….to many different people….

I agree Zark - that is why I keep coming back to this forum - there is a lot of good ideas tossed around and a lot of support in the form of inspiration and ideas I would not have thought of.
Life is waaaay to short to NOT try something new and take a chance.
