Here is a thought. How about we buy a boat, not a very expensive one, but decent enough to house 10 or 12 people.
On this boat we would install wireless satillite broadband and solar powered energy for our laptops. There would be some office and recreation space.
With laptops and backpacks we would set off to some of the most exotic locations and drop anchor for a few weeks before moving off again, perhaps following the summer season.
So all I need is a dozen willing working nomads, a boat, a RYA sailing qualification and a generous corporate sponsor.

I dream of something like this, though not sure I would want to share a small boat with a dozen individually minded backpackers with there differing dreams and ideals.
Just to scare you off the thought watch the DVD “The Beach” or get a copy of Jessie Martins’ book about his sailing voyage called “Kijana - the real story”
However with the new 3G service in Australia, a camper van and the queensland coast might be the go.

Webby. That’s a great idea.
I think you could generate alot of interest with an idea like that. Possibly even interest for a documentary film.
Good luck.

Having spent 5 1/2 months traveling through Africa with the same 19 people, I would not want to repeat the experience of being cooped up in a small space over a long period of time. It was a great experience, partly because I pretty much managed to ignore the various factions and infighting and other group dynamic problems.
What I envision is person A sitting on the deck with their laptop, and person B walking by and screaming “You stole my idea!” Or worse, “You stole my beer!”
And I was on a good trip, with the fewest problems our very experienced driver(s) had ever seen.

How about a private jet? Then we could save on airfares.

I think the ‘being cooped up’ thing would not be an issue providing we dropped anchor regualrly and had life on land for a few days here and there, but I know what you mean!

We stopped at cities and had a life outside of camp, too.

Actually good point. On a boat there really is no escape from each other for long periods of time. Would be one hell of an interesting social experiment though!
I think having a WN house in Asia somewhere would be more practical. Would be great to have an environment to exchange ideas and where you’re not totally isolated while working but being on land has the added benefit of being able to do your own thing when you want to as well.

While I have been travelling, I keep thinking how cool it be to have a guesthouse on the beach somewhere. I just have to find the perfect beach.

I know the perfect beach. Really I do.

I met someone in Hamner Springs who asked if I was interested in joining her dad on a RTW yacht trip, or parts of the four stages he was doing it in. He was looking for some kinda sponsorship, and wasn’t looking for people with experience…. maybe, just maybe…..
Unfortunately I gave her my email ‘just incase’ but haven’t heard anything since.

Not sure about the broadband. My first guess would be no, but what with development I doubt it would be too long before there are hotspots there!

You could apply for position of deckhand on s/v Nomadness to get experience: nomadness.com

What a great idea!
But you’ll need to eat, of course!
I’ve got some ideas:)
It would be a good exercise in how people got along with each other more than anything else, but a perfect solution to the whole ‘Working Nomad’ theme.

Webby - not been on the site for a while, too much drinking, sailing and watching cricket to be done!
Great idea, i’m up for it, i’ve loved sailing round the islands last few weeks here, and all the main marinas have free wireless broadband - just a shame i didn’t buy a laptop before i came out, as the internet cafes leave a little to be desired!
