I have two laptops (neither very expensive!). One big heavy Dell with all the whistles and bells and my small Toshiba Portege which is literally falling to pieces. The events of this slightly drunken evening in Kuala Lumpur did n’t do much to extend the life of my smaller laptop.
So I have pretty much decided to go with the Dell for my winter escape. It is much heavier than the Portege but it has many additonal advantages. It has much more processing power, the keyboard is bigger and it should help me be more productive.
It also has a DVD / CD Rom which is something I never had before which can be useful for nights in on the road.
I am off to France on Saturday with my Mother on a belated birthday five day holiday treat. It will be a little insight for her into the world of independent travel which should be cool.

Just bought a laptop - 12″ HP NC4200 - tiny and powerful - well hopefully its not arrived yet! At the end of the day what sold me was the 7hr battery life plus the size of the thing. What I notice that a lot of the laptops these days are no smaller than the one I used to lug around for work over 10 years ago - not good if no one is paying for the taxis !

7 hours battery life! That’s superb. Must have cost a pretty penny
My big laptop has the additional advantage of having a better battery life than the other one which was quite old.
In fact battery life for the Nomad is very important. One day we’ll be walking around with Solor powered ones hopefully!

Maybe you are past the ‘experiment’ stage, and should invest in a ‘new’ laptop. While you might not want to take a really expensive one, some high-powered lightweight models have been out for a while now, and if you look you may be able once again to buy a computer on the internet by spending a bit more, without going overboard. It is a shame to have the machine with the features you like be the one you use the least.

Maybe lug the old one and see if you can get better prices in Thailand or Singapore?

It was NZ$2000 (say Euro1000 STG650) with a 1GB memory and 60GB HD and a DVD burner. I decided I might as well get a decent one and sell the 2! desktops.

RE solar powered - you can get solar powwered battery chargers - seen them in the Australian 4wd mags! We are thinking of getting an inverter so we can charge the laptop from the cigerette lighter in the car while driving
